CLAY TOWNSHIP'S TAX RATES AND FUND BALANCE
There has been a lot of misinformation suggesting that the current board is draining the fund balance and overtaxing residents. However, if you've reviewed Know the Facts about the Tax, you'll know that Clay Township hasn't raised taxes in years, and the local tax rate remains very reasonable. Any tax increases have come from countywide millages, initiated by voters, and the funds from those do not stay within Clay.
We encourage you to examine the General Fund Balance from our annual audits over the past decade (listed below). The notable decrease in 2019-2020 was due to a strategic property purchase aimed at future growth (next to the bowling alley) and the development of a Township park on Krispin Blueway in Harsens Island. Additionally, the economic impact of COVID-19 reduced revenues during that time. These decisions reflect our commitment to the community's long-term interests. Transparency in financial management is crucial, and we hope this helps clear up any confusion.
